Basic research in the Klinik und Poliklinik für Innere Medizin II focuses on the molecular pathogenesis of diseases of pancreas, liver, and the gastrointestinal tract. Special centres of research are cancerogenesis and acute as well as chronic inflammation of organs of the gastrointestinal system using various in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo models (transgenic animal models). Furthermore, translational research shall identify novel biomarkers that allow diagnosis and predict response to individualized intervention and treatment.
Outstanding science with an interdisciplinary background is the label of our basic and clinical research. This is underscored by the participation in several collaborative research centers (Sonderforschungsbereiche), the sponsorship by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and the sponsorship by the German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe).
